MISys QuickBooks Period End Connection Error

Here is the scenario I ran into:

A Client ran into the following error:

"QuickBooks Interface Error: A QuickBooks company data file is already open and it is different from the one requested or there are multiple company files open"

The Solution

Some more background information:

  • There was only one company file on QuickBooks Enterprise: Manufacturing and Engineering Edition 20.0

  • This error occurred periodically

  • Restarting the desktop PC did not resolve the issue

This error indicates an issue with the path that MISys is using to access the QB company file on this machine.  To check this, log into QuickBooks on the machine with the error and hit the F2 key. The window that pops up will show the path that QuickBooks is using to access the company file on that particular machine.

Next step will require exclusive access rights in MISys. In MISys you will need to go to:

Administration | Company Options | Accounting tab.

Here you will see that path that MISys is using to access the QB company file on this machine.

These two paths need to be the same.  If the paths are different but pointing to the same location (mapped drive vs UNC file path vs absolute file path) you can get the error.

This setup needs to be reviewed and changed on each machine that QuickBooks is run on.
